Australian Capital Territory, federal district in southeastern Australia, bordered by the state of New South Wales. The territory, including the site of Canberra, the capital city of Australia, was formally acquired by the Australian government in 1911. Port Jervis Bay Territory, situated at Jervis Bay on the coast, is attached to the Australian Capital Territory for administrative purposes.
